What class of rapids can beginners safely handle in an inflatable boat?
My boyfriend and I bought an inflatable boat and are planning to raft the local river. I think we should go no higher than Class II rapids, but he thinks I’m being silly and that we’ll be ok up to Class IV. He thinks they look pretty calm from the shore. I have been white water rafting (up to Class V) several times with a river guide and know how swift the water can be even when it looks really calm. But he still thinks I’m being a killjoy. Am I being silly or is he being stupid ?
My ONLY rafting experience has been guided tours, and he has even less experience.
All answers are welcome, but I’m especially interested in hearing from people who have rafting experience and really understand the differences between the classes of rapids, and the experience necessary to safely maneuver them.
I think that you’re being wise. Class 4 rapids are very difficult to navigate, and I don’t think in my feelings and experience that either of you have enough experience to navigate these safely.
Class four rivers are described as signficant rapids and swells as well as many obstacles in the route such as sweepers, log jams, weeds, rocks, and many more things like that.
Class one is flat water such as lakes or very slow moving rivers. Class two is when there is some general rapids, but nothing too big.
In my opinion, class two is even a bit challenging for you to do with little or no experience. I would to tell you the honest truth stay at a class 1, as this still can involves some minor rapids or minore ripples but still is primarily flat.
With class 2, I think that you should do some more guided trips before you attempt this level
This is for your boyfriend to look at, so that he is able to clearly understand the various river classifications. If he is still in doubt, phone a boating company or other organization like that, and have them talk with your boyfriend about the dangers of going into waters too powerful.
