What are the best in water tools for a brand new adult swimmer?
I know, I know, who waits until they are 30 years old to learn how to swim in the first place? But I am finally taking the plunge and in my very first beginner swimming class, I spent the entire class trying to keep my goggles from leaking, so first what are good goggles for beginners? In the second class the new goggles didn’t leak but they colored so it was hard for me to see clearly in them (oy vey). Also I feel like I need a swim cap but I have very thick hair, any suggestions? What else do I need to finally be able to succeed in this class besides a verrrry patient instructor?
Congratulations on taking the plunge and there is never a too old to start swimming.
I can relate to the goggle situation. There are several different styles of goggles on the market. Some are made to fit inside the eye socket area while others seal more outside the socket. I have always had problems with the goggles leaking and it was rare when I found one that didn’t. One lens would fill up then after I got that sealed the other one would fill.
I did find one by AquaSphere that fits more like a snorkeling mask which is excellent because it is designed along the lines of a snorkeling mask (without the nose being enclosed). The the link for the pic and description. The seal is a hypoallergenic silicone and the fit is very comfortable. I have used the Seal, the XP and the Vista goggles from this manufacturer and have yet to be disappointed.
I didn’t understand what you meant by your goggles colored unless you are meaning that they fogged up. If fogging is the problem they do make anti fogging solutions for swim goggles. Because the goggles have plastic lenses, it is not advisable to use de fogging solutions that are used for scuba masks. The second link will direct you to the defog for swim goggles. In a pinch, simply spitting in the goggles, rubbing the spit around and dunking it once will also work. Remember that every time you remove the goggles it takes some of the anti fog and spit out so it would have to be reapplied.
Before using any defog or spit, new goggles should be washed with a mild soap. This is especially true with the lenses as they can have an oily residue on them from the manufacturer. The residue needs to be removed otherwise no amount of spit or defog will help.
I suggest a swim cap made of silicone over those made of Latex. The silicone will last longer than the latex as silicone is more resistant to breaking down by the chemicals used in pools.
As far as what else you need to succeed? The fact that you are taking the lessons shows determination and a desire to learn. Those alone are more than enough to succeed.
